Jim Houser is a self-taught artist who brings together poetic observations, anthropomorphic creatures, and an array of images in flatly rendered, cartoon-like paintings that recall the work of Howard Finster. Houser’s artistic endeavors developed out of obsessive story writing and cartoon illustration jotted down in sketchbooks. He proclaims that his consistent color palette is inspired by “sea water, dog fur, and dried blood”. Houser is also a musician, occasionally creating music to accompany his artworks. His work is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

After participating in the 2001 Philagrafika Invitational, Houser exhibited at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, NY; Volta NY 2011; and at “The Emergence of the Pop Imagist Group Exhibition” in Venice, Italy among other venues.
