Henry Bermudez’s paintings are steeped in dream imagery. Carefully constructed forms emerge from rich and complex settings. Animal forms and allegorical figures are presented as gracefully powerful combinations of muscle and sensuality, frequently embedded in complex geometric designs. The iconography in his paintings deftly explores the intersection of pre-Columbian, Christian, and ancient myths - as well as other religions and legends - melding cultures and creating a new language of images and meanings. Bermudez’s intricately constructed portfolio print continues these explorations. His work is in the permanent collections of the Venezuela National Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art Sofia Imber, both in Caracas, Venezuela, as well as many other public and private collections in Venezuela and beyond.
Bermudez has been exhibiting his work internationally since the 1970’s in locations including the Philadelphia International Airport, Projects Gallery, and the Painted Bride Art Center, all in Philadelphia; the Hard Core Gallery, Miami, FL; Mason Murer Projects, Atlanta, GA; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Maracaibo, Venezuela. Bermudez represented Venezuela in the 1986 Venice Biennale.
